Every year, as October hits, I climb into the back of my wardrobe, venture behind my summer dresses and dig out my jumpers. And then it hits: it’s not just jumpers I’m looking out for – I’ve got to start hunting down a new winter coat.
This search is always a large task. A coat needs to work with all my clothes, bags and shoes – boring black won’t do. As a result, I find myself glaring endlessly at my laptop looking at shops online or getting stressed between Oxford Street stores. This year, the hunt is on and for anyone else that might be feeling the pressure, I’ve narrowed down some options.
A big trend this season is the teddy bear coat. It might not be the most glamourous, but its fuzziness is sure to make you feel as snug as bug, especially when winter really hits. MaxMara is leading the high-end pack, sticking with the camel teddy colour for that sumptuous winter warmth. But if you’re in the market for something brighter, Topshop has got it nailed: there’s a cuddly coat in almost every colour.
Tartan is my second option, another style that has worked its way back into fashion’s frosty glare. You might think that wearing an all-tartan coat will make you look like you grabbed a rug and covered yourself in it, but stay with me. Think of it as a preppy look. It showed up in Victoria Beckham’s collection and on Mulberry’s runway for autumn/winter 2013, bringing on the rustic patchwork. Predictably, the high street have pulled out the stops too – Urban Outfitters, Miss Selfridge and Zara have mixed royal purples, reds and dusky charcoal greys together for the best affordable tartan.
But there’s something in understatement for overstatement, and the boyfriend coat is just that. Rule number one: it comes oversized. With a structured shoulder line, the masculine tailored coat works the no fuss look, like anyone’s business. River Island is the one to watch here, this season working a military twist into the mix.
With only a matter of weeks – let’s hope! – before winter really kicks in, it’s time for a shopping spree. This one is going to be your New Best Friend – choose wisely
