‘I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says “Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.’ ― Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
Alice’s Wonderland fused with the illuminating glow of a white blanket of snow that enshrouds all that surrounds us. Unluckily for those in the harsh and forever precipitating weather of London, we never get to see the white blanket. But, not unlike Alice’s dreamland, we do get our own personal Winter Wonderland that aims to encapsulate holiday fun and merriment that comes with the anticipation of Christmas!
Nestled in London’s notorious Hyde Park, it is offers an array of exciting activities to fill your day that makes sure that you get the abundance of Christmas cheer you were all hoping for.
This year’s exciting new addition to Wonderland is the Magical Ice Kingdom, where you are enveloped in the fantastical world of ice and snow that hopefully momentarily makes your forget the dreary aspect of the eternal lack of actual snow in London.
The ice rink is a personal favourite – effortlessly (I hope) skating across the glimmering icy stage you are taken away from all your worries as you share the experience with laughter, fun and friends! I dream of ice skating being effortless, but really it can be a piece of work. Maintaining your balance while coordinating your feet and attempting to preserve the lack of pain in your backside. My advice is psych yourself up for it – it’s a laugh and a workout and really sums up the motto of Olivia Newton’s track ‘Let’s get physical!’
The talking tree full of merriment and seasonal jokes keeps in line with the festivities. With winter crackers that get you laughing and cheering along (mainly due to how cheesy the punch lines are!), such as the amusing “A polar bear walks into a bar and says to the bartender, ‘”I’ll have a brandy…………………………………. and coke.” The bartender asks, “What’s with the big pause?” The bear responds, “I dunno… I’ve always had them.”‘
If you’re up for some acrobatic antics, daredevil performers or an ample of fun with a festive clown clowning-around, then the Zippos Christmas Circus or Cirque Bersek is for you! Circus shows have been upgraded this year to the Mega Dome, which is the largest tent in the UK, and sets up an enthralling atmosphere where you will feel comfortable in anticipation of the show. Zippos Christmas Circus offers a performance befitting the whole family with colourful displays while Cirque Berserk are launching their new show ‘MECHANIKA’, full of danger, just right for the evening crowd.
Food wise, do not fear! There are ample stalls and quaint seasonal cafes that will keep your appetite firmly satisfied. They have the sensational German bratwurst (a heavenly sausage of enormous size), chocolate dipped bananas and, of course, who could forget the mountain of candyfloss (come get it while it’s still sticky and before it’s all gone!). However, the pizzazz must be attributed to the variety and pure deliciousness of the crepes, the abundance of flavours and the love that I feel – as I imagine you do as well – for pancakes, makes the crepe a perfect food for a wintery outing for a festive Londoner!
