Perfect Pancakes and Scrumptious Shakes: My Old Dutch

My Old Dutch

Hankering for something sweet whilst your friends fancy a savoury meal? Unsure as to whether it’s time for a savoury lunch or just a sugary-something to pick you up? Pancakes are your answer. My Old Dutch, with restaurants in Holborn, Kensington, and Chelsea, is your place of choice to cater to all of these needs.

The restaurant myself and my friend went to, in Holborn, holds a distinctly DIY and homemade aesthetic, with wooden tables painted bright blue, frying pans hanging on the walls, and astro turf (I assume coinciding with Easter coming up soon) decorating some of the walls. It’s a lovely kitsch spot, and the bright orange of the exterior ensures it stands out from the grey streets.

The menu is filled with as many pancake flavours you can imagine, from a variety of savoury fillings (chilli con carne, seafood, and four cheeses are just a small selection). My friend ordered the Greek pancake, which contained aubergine, halloumi and feta cheese, tomatoes, and onions. Personally, I fall onto the other side of the pancake spectrum: I believe pancakes are an exclusively sweet food. Though they had a fab selection of sweet pancakes including Nutella, or Pear and Cinnamon, I decided to try the Poffertjes, which are tiny, fluffy, Dutch pancakes. I chose to accompany mine with strawberries and cream, which was delectable. Paired with this was a peanut butter and banana smoothie (which I tell myself is healthy and one of my five a day, right?).

It is also well worth noting that the portion sizes are HUGE. Honestly, the table next to us were sharing their pancake and ice cream between four of them (did I feel guilty as I shared mine with me and me only?… NO!). It is definitely worth the money – you will certainly be full after and most definitely in a food coma. In addition, My Old Dutch runs an offer called ‘Monday Madness’, where any of their savoury or sweet pancakes are reduced to just £5, and with the size they are, you cannot argue with that. The rest of the week, there’s a 10% discount if you present your student card, so take advantage of that, too. Fear not, gluten and dairy-free options are available and accommodated for, too.

So what are you waiting for? Need I say more?

Why not visit one of their restaurants and indulge your sweet (or savoury) tooth. And of course, don’t forget to let me know what option you end up choosing from the wide variety they have to offer…
