Have you ever wondered how to get involved with Queen Mary’s Trading and Investment Society?
We interviewed two of the committee members, President, Christian Hirsekorn and Vice-President Pattawia Supradit to find out how:
Christian Hirsekorn, President
Q: What is QMTIS?
A: QMTIS is all about collaborating and creating an environment for our members and QM students to explore various areas of finance, network with professionals from the industry and to learn about Trading, Investing, Economics and Politics.
Q: When did you join QMTIS?
A: I have been lucky enough to be part of and be able to shape Queen Mary’s most prestigious and active society as Portfolio Manager, Vice President and President since joining Queen Mary in 2015. The society has been around since 2008 and it is a really great network and reputation students can benefit from.
Q: What has QMTIS done so far this semester?
A: In the past weeks we have already brought in speakers from J.P. Morgan, HSBC, Barclays, ING, BNY Mellon, PwC, KMPG, Deloitte, EY and other financial firms.
Q: What’s new this year?
A: This year we have established a Technology subgroup which is focusing on FInTech, AI, Machine Learning and developing a Trading Simulator. We have also set up a mentorship scheme with mentors from the above-mentioned companies. Our network regularly comes to our socials and in-house training events.
Q: Why should students sign up for QMTIS?
A: We host the best events by bringing in the most prestigious banks and firms, we have an extensive network and an amazing community of like-minded and passionate members and alumni.
Q: How can students benefit the most from the society?
A: The more you put in, the more you get out of it. Just be proactive and join one of our sub-committee groups such as Equity Research, Trading, Macro Research and Technology. This will give you the chance to socialise and also to develop your interpersonal skills
Pattawia Supradit, Vice President
Q: How has your journey with QMTIS been so far?
A: I have been a member of QMTIS since my first year and I must say, it really has accelerated my career. This is because I have been able to spend time with people who are sharing the same mind-set, and goals about a career in finance.
Q: How has QMTIS contributed to your career success?
A: The biggest part that has shaped me as a person is how I have never taken no as an answer. The help and coaching that I have been receiving from the society enhanced my confidence, which in fact allowed me to get myself an internship in both Investment Banking Division and Global Markets with BNP Paribas when I was in my first year. In my 2nd year I then interned at Nomura, a global Japanese Investment Bank.
Q: How do you help members in QMTIS to be as successful as you?
A: We push our members to reach our goals and eventually secure spring insights, summer internships and graduate roles. This is why we have implemented the mentorship scheme and why we have been bringing in so many speakers and alumni who are now working in the City.
Q: What about the fun part?
A: Our socials are a great opportunity to make friends and to also find a mentor from an industry you are interested in. In short, I’d like to say that the society is more than just a great place for you to acquire the story and skills to showcase to the interviewers at the companies you like, but what is more than that is you really get to have a team who share the same passion and goals as you do. QMTIS is a place where fun meets success.
