Drop your tools! Swap your brushes for a hands-on approach to make-up
Summer is here and it’s all about the glow! To achieve that perfect, flawless summer glow, switch your precise brushwork for artistic sweeps of the finger – here’s how to master the technique:
- An effortless base
The secret to achieving a sculpted, dewy finish to your look is to make sure you have prepped and primed your skin well before you begin to apply any products. During the summer, it is abut keeping your look natural and glowy, giving the illusion of smooth, healthy skin. To do this, give your skin a good massage when doing your skin care routine. I would highly recommend to firstly use the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Cleanserto cleanse your skin, followed by massaging and hydrating your skin using the Josie Maran Pure Argan Oil and The Body Shop Vitamin C Glow Boosting Moisturiser. Pat these products onto your face and give your face a good massage using outward, lifting motions to promote absorption and until you feel its nicely soaked into your skin. Using facial oils and massaging your skin is the perfect treatment for both a smooth base and healthy blood circulation. The oil really helps to provide your skin with moisture as well as giving that instant, healthy natural glow. This will allow your foundation to blend flawlessly onto your skin and I would highly recommend using NARS Sheer Glow Foundation. This foundation is brilliant for summer as it is lightweight and blends easily onto the skin, giving a dewy finish. Instead of using your beauty blender or brush, use your fingers to work the foundation onto the skin and then add concealer only in places where you need to. This keeps your look simple and natural, but at the same time very glowy! By using your fingers and hands, you are activating the ingredients in the products from the heat radiated from your hands and this makes sure you are utilising the products to their full potential and gaining the most benefit out from them.
- Cheeky glow
Our fingers make blending so much easier and are the perfect tools for liquid and cream products. Use a cream blusher such as the The Bobbie Brown Pot Rouge. This is a multitasking cream formula that works perfectly on both lips and cheeks and is available in 9 different shades from bright to pastel colours. Take some product on the back of your hand and gently rub it until it melts, then dab the cream blusher onto the apples of your cheeks and onto your lips for a natural stain. When it comes to lips, I also recommend dabbing a little amount of lip gloss or glossy lip balm onto the center on your lips and pressing your lips together to blend the product evenly. The cream blush gives your lips a natural plump and colour, whilst the gloss gives a smooth shine and glow, perfect for the summer!
- Shiny eyes
Using our fingers on our eyes is a lot easier than you think. Using your ring finger, sweep pigment over the lids or smudge liner along the lashline with your fingers. I recommend using soft brown and orange colours over the lids to enhance the natural tint of your lids or you can add a pop of colour to your lashline and smudge that slightly. Cream formulas ensure the application of eye-makeup is quick and simple to apply. For a soft, shimmery finish, use a cream eye shadow such as Maybelline Colour Tattoo 24Hr Eyeshadow in On and On Bronze. Sweep the cream shadow and blend outwards using your finger. This metallic bronze shade cream eyeshadow goes perfectly with all skin tones and blends beautifully, allowing for a summery, bronze finish to your eyes. A little secret of mine for extra glow is dabbing a bit of lip-gloss or Vaseline to the center of your eye lids. This is called the ‘wet look’ and instantly enhances your eyes and gives the perfect shimmery finish. To complete the look, finish your eyes using mascara and you’re good to go!
- Glow to the Gods above!
Whatever season, no makeup look is complete without highlighter. Especially during the summer, we want to make sure our glow is on point! Take a liquid highlighter such as NYX Professional Makeup Born to Glow Liquid Highlighter. Liquid highlighters are super lightweight and this one is multifunctional as this can be used as a primer before your foundation. It gives an overall glow to your face, or you can take a small amount and rub it in between your index fingers and dab it along your cheekbones and cupids bow for a refreshing luminosity! Another trick of mine for highlighter is to take a tiny amount of coconut oil and rub it between your two middle fingers and then dab it onto the high points of the cheeks, bridge of the nose and cupids bow. Coconut oil has numerous health benefits and is the best ingredient for your skin as it is natural and helps maintain healthy, younger looking skin. Then take a powder highlighter to set the oil, gently pressing the highlighter on top of the oil with your ring finger, making you glow to the gods above!
