The four-piece alternative rock band GARDEN has just dropped their new single ‘Where Has My Youth Gone’. A relatively small, but surely rising, band based in the Midlands and originally formed in my home town Northampton – the band have done wonders with this new release.

This sombre track is the epitome of nostalgia, using a steady tempo throughout and a continuous chord riff on electric guitar. The vocals, sung by Cam Pike, showcase the highs and lows of his vocal range. Pike’s voice holds a piercing volume of emotion, felt particularly in the chorus where he questions, simply ‘where has my youth gone?’. This is a powerful query which, I’m sure, resonates with us all in some way.
When I hear this song, I feel almost at peace with my wistfulness. The music plays like a flowing constant with a steady and simplistic bassline. Yet, the chordal guitar riff coupled with quietly assertive cymbals creates seamless transitions from verse to chorus, which certainly stirs up emotion. The melody line is catchy and is now etched in my memory, and the verse’s lyrics really do complete the sense of reflection, with words that speak of a face that ‘haunts’ and a ‘dream sequence’.
In terms of musicality, ‘Where Has My Youth Gone’ reminds me of ‘Sad Smile’, a single released by GARDEN earlier this year. The two complement each other and act as sister songs, with the same airy sense of nostalgia and dreamy guitar chords and riffs. ‘Sad Smile’ is no doubt one of my favourite releases from the band, along with ‘Where Has My Youth Gone’.
Across their other singles, like ‘Blue’, ‘Love Me To Death’ and ‘Hate Me’, (just to name a few), slightly heavier use of guitar, drums and bass can be found – rooted in their rock influences. GARDEN have tipped their hats to musical sensations such as Prince, Wolf Alice and Pearl Jam as important musical guidances, and this can certainly be heard throughout their music. These influences take shape in their singles with a darker edge, and tracks with more hazy, melancholy sounds.

If you haven’t already, I implore you to listen to GARDEN’s tunes, especially if you’re a sucker for alt-rock like me. ‘Where Has My Youth Gone’ has left me eager for their next release and intrigued as to what sounds the band will toy with next.
And it looks like we won’t need to wait too long, either, since GARDEN announced that they will be aiming to release a new single every month in 2020. Keep your eyes peeled!
