Presumably, homework horrors power melancholy music.
Students are the future. Like… yeah, obvious, but also a fact not acted upon by many people. You lot are the fun exception, and for that, I thank you. Today, I have the genuine joy of introducing you to the newest single of another student with a better chance of remaining in the music industry – Ryan Billings, also known as Roadie.
The biggest draw for me is the lyricism – think Alex Turner on tracks like ‘Fireside’ or ‘505’. There’s an air of forlorn mystique that’s hard to capture both in writing and as a musician. The clichéd rolls smartly into clever and compelling lines. “I can’t stop thinking of reasons to dream of you / Because the lipstick stains on my mirror have all gone smooth” is a particular favourite of mine. Matched with a softly sung vocal that veers towards rawness without ever falling off that ragged edge, we’re gifted a delightfully soulful experience. Importantly, it feels like it fits.
Equally compelling is the stripped back tonality of the track. It’s man and guitar in mournful matrimony. Frankly, anything more produced than the harmonising oohs would detract rather than improve. With the guitar staying firmly in the realm of not-quite-softly strummed chords, the lo-fi bedroom ambience is truly *chefs kiss*.
With a recent run of media appearances and lyric video due out soon, now would be a great time to get listening so you can tell your friends in five years that you were there from the start, duuuude.
‘Candle Light’, as well as Roadie’s first single ‘Pretzel’ are available on all good streaming services.
