Inkpot: The Doctor

This piece was inspired by Lydia Davis’ Can’t and Won’t, which contains the shortest stories I have ever seen. Her stories are simple, fabulous and incredibly imaginative. I submitted this work as part of my Creative Writing Portfolio in hopes of expressing how much I loved experimenting with Davis’ writing style.

I see the giant needle and scream. I’m under my bed now, hiding. The doctor can’t find me here. I hear thundering footsteps. Closer, closer, closer. All I know is that I’m scared. The tiny hairs on my arm stand up. They feel cold. I close my eyes and open them. I’m in the freezer, squished in between piles of Greek yoghurt and grape boxes. Surely he can’t find me here.

The refrigerator door slowly creeps open.

The doctor grins.

  1. This is so short and sharp and disturbing… Absolutely love it. Can’t wait to read more from Taslima!
