Add Lights, Shadow and Contour

It has only been a few years since we began shading, sculpting and highlighting our faces. The contour kit is a must-have in many make-up kits. I have made my way through many kits and know what is worth the extra money. I am usually in quite the rush, so I need plenty of choice between powders, sticks or cream contours.

There is a fundamental difference between contour products and bronzing products. No, it’s not a way for the brands to make more money. Contour products are cool toned. They are supposed to take away colour and warmth away from the complexion. You use contour products to remove attention away from areas you don’t want anyone to focus on. Bronzer products are warmed toned and they are supposed to add colour to your face. You can use a bronzer, well anywhere really, but they are usually saved for areas that you want to give a sun-kissed glow.

You can combine different contouring products to suit your needs. For example, I prefer using a powder on my forehead and cheeks, then use a contour pencil for nose. I have gathered some of the best contouring products in the game at the moment. Let’s dive in!

Smashbox: Contour & Highlight Stick Singles

These are creamy, soft and blending sticks that you can use to contour, shade, highlight or illuminate your face structure. The pencils glide onto the skin effortlessly and will deliver targeted application for a smooth and even finish. I highly recommend purchasing the Step-by-Step Contour Stick Trio as you can get most of the pencils when used together. It’s a great option for those just getting into the make-up game.

Kevyn Aucoin: The Contour & Highlighter Duo

A simple but effective contouring and highlighting duo. The powder glides on like a buttery dream but still gives you a crease-free and matte finish. This is the powder you want to enhance your bone structure with. It has a grey undertone which makes it perfect for shading when creating structure. It also contains brown and red pigments to help with adding dimension to the face as it gives natural-looking definition.

Fenty Beauty: Match Stix Matte Skinstick

I am a sucker for the Match Stix by Fenty Beauty. They have created one of the best cream contour sticks in the industry. They are weightless, long wearing and have a matte finish. You can use these in the summer without looking seriously greasy. Another aspect that I love is that they are buildable in their cream-to-powder formula. You will never have to be worried about caking or creasing again with these sticks.

Charlotte Tilbury: Hollywood Contour Wand

Another fabulously lightweight contouring products. You will have the best cheeks after you apply this one. It is super blend-able and very buildable, so if you’re looking for a natural contour, you’ve come to the right place. The cushion applicator ensures that product is dispensed evenly. A little bit goes a long way with this one, so be sure to check it out!

KKW Beauty: Crème Contour & Highlight Set

I’ll admit that I was rather dubious about the KKW Beauty contour sticks. I am a convert because these are ultra-creamy and ultra-buildable. They are so easy to use and give the natural finish that I really strive for. There is nothing worse than realising you have several brown streaks no your face and having difficulty blending them away. This is perfect for nose contouring and jawline contouring.

Armani Beauty: Neo Nude A-Contour

This is a water-based liquid colour. It sounds a little daunting at first, but it will instantly fuse with the skin and give you that healthy-looking and glory complexion while sculpting your face. Think of the pigment as more of a watercolour. It will define your features for a natural look. These are buildable and blend-able. You cannot go wrong with this or make any mistakes with it!

Dior: Backstage Contour Palette

Another effortless powder that I am throwing into the mix for easy sculpting and definition. The palette holds buildable matter and iridescent textures. It has rich pigments so be sure to get a powder brush to diffuse any harsh lines with this one. You don’t have to worry though, you will still get a long-wearing and second-skin finish, making it a beaut for the cheeks and forehead.

Anastasia Beverly Hills: Powder Contour Kit

You get three highlighter shades and three contour shades in matte and shimmer finishes in this kit. You can do it all with this one. Get ready to brighten and sculpt seamlessly and effortlessly with these powders. The powders are finely milled and give buildable coverage that effortlessly adheres and blends into the skin. Say hello to multidimensional effects in a palette.

Westman Atelier: Face Trace

I love this cream contour stick for its formula more than anything else. It contains organic jojoba oil, which is a natural antioxidant, that will tone and restore the skin. It even includes china clay to absorb excess oil. The berryflux vita is great for deep moisturising and youth-preserving properties. It’s just so awesome! This is sculpting and skincare in a tube.

Tom Ford: Shade and Illuminate

I am culminating this list with one of the best contenders for best contouring palette. It will define and shape in all the ways you want it to. This is the palette that will deliver on its promises. This product makes it so easy and effortless to contour. Use the light shade draw light onto the skin, so you can brighten the face, and the lift the face. The dark shade will define and contour the bones and hides what you don’t want seen.
