Your Go-To Toner

Toners don’t have the best reputation. They first came to the market as solutions that would temporarily take all the excess oil away from the face. Unfortunately, they were high in alcohol, and they would leave your skin more irritated than it was to begin with and often very dry. Now that is no longer the case. A good toner can do wonders in your skincare routine when used correctly.

It took me ages to figure out what toner even is. After conducting some in-depth research a few years ago, I figured out what they were, and which ones were the best by checking out the ingredients needed in a good toner. So, what do they do? Well, it is a liquid used after cleanser to balance the skin’s pH level and hydrate the cells, which will then help the skin absorb ingredients from other products on top. The quicker answer is that it will help the effectiveness of the products you will put on top.

I have gathered some toners together that I have tried and tested over the years and can give my official seal of approval. These toners are much more sophisticated than the ones you have seen in decades past. They contain antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, acids and glycerins. Your skin concerns will be answered today!

Herbivore: Jasmine Green Tea Oil Control Toner

If you have combination, blemish-prone or oily skin, then this is the toner for you. Your congested pores will thank you for this one. The toner contains jasmine water which will calm the redness and refreshen the skin. The green tea extract is packed with antioxidants, in turn, it will help soothe and protect the skin. This is then followed by the white willow bark, a beta hydroxy acid, which will ease inflammation.

Dr. Barbara Sturm: Balancing Toner

If you wear make-up every day, then this is a brilliant addition to any make-up cleanser, and I have many that I can recommend on that note. This toner will collect any remaining make-up, dirt or debris after you have washed your face. It will be tightening your pores, balance the sebum levels and makes a great base for your chosen moisturiser. The hyaluronic acid in this toner will give the intense moisture boost your skin needs.

Sisley: Floral Toning Lotion

The main ingredients in this toner are rose, cornflower and witch hazel. The rose refreshens and softens the skin, while the cornflower soothes it and the witch hazel tones it. You can be assured that this will remove any traces of make-up and ensure the skin is cleansed. This is a soothing and softening toner that works really well on dry and sensitive skin, too. A great addition to your daily skincare routine.

SK-II: Facial Treatment Essence

The bottle that will help get you crystal clear skin. This toner will moisturise and soften your skin texture, that is once it has reduced the appearance of dark spots, reduced your fine lines from dryness and enhanced the natural radiance of your skin. This lightweight toner will quickly absorb into the skin. It contains a natural bio ingredient derived from yeast fermentation that resembles the skin’s natural moisturising factors.

Origins: Pore Purifying Toner with Saw Palmetto & Mint

This toner is great for those hot and sweltering summer days. It is also excellent for oily skin as it works to cleanse deeply and control excess oil. The primary ingredients are saw palmetto, mint and salicylic acid. They come together to reduce shine and remove excess oil. I highly recommend using this in conjunction with other pore-cleansing products in your routine for the best results.

The Ordinary: Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution

Personally, this one was not for me thanks to the aloe vera, however it has been beloved by trusted friends who said this had to be on the list. This toner will ensure you get the radiant skin you have been promised on the bottle. It contains glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid, which will gently exfoliate your skin and improve upon its texture. The Tasmanian pepperberry reduces inflammation while the ginseng root soothes the skin.

La Roche-Posay: Effaclar Clarifying Lotion

Another wonderful option for those who have oily and blemish-prone skin. It will unblock your pores, visibly reduce their size and help eliminate excess oil. The active ingredients will regulate sebum production and exfoliate the skin thanks to the lipo-hydroxy acid. If you’re prone to allergic reactions, then this is a suitable option for you to consider.

Ole Henriksen: Glow2OH Dark Spot Toner

Possibly one of the best toners for dark spots and uneven texture. The toner contains AHAs, with its glycolic acid and lactic acid, which evens skin texture and reduces the appearance of dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles. The witch hazel water helps to brighten and refine the skin. Meanwhile, the lemon, sugar cane, chamomile, sandalwood extracts and liquorice root will soothe and condition the skin.

Kiehl’s: Ultra Facial Toner

Another wonderful choice if you want to refine the surface texture of the skin. It uses natural oils and holds a lot of Vitamin E to help clean excess dirt and debris from the day. It contains avocado oil which helps restore the skin’s natural radiance. The apricot kernel oil will moistures and soften the skin. Pick this bottle up if you want some serious hydration and moisturisation before you even put on your moisturiser.

A delicate and non-alcoholic toner. You can be sure all the impurities that were missed after washing your face will be picked up while serving your hydration and moisturising needs. The formula incorporates white brightening rose native cells to protect your pores from dryness and refine the appearance of pores. Keep your skin looking vibrant, comfortable and healthy with this toner.
