Recipe of the Week: Deep Fried Oreos.

Deep fried Oreos are a right crowd pleaser! This dish is something I’ve made quite a bit over the summer – and yes, I know it sounds like something that would give you diabetes just by looking at them, but you can allow yourself to have some on your cheat days! Plus now the summer is over, it will soon be winter and the time to wear big fluffy jumpers to hide your food baby… This recipe is super simple and quick as well – a win win situation.

The ingredients you need for this recipe are:

  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Caster sugar
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Egg
  • Whole milk
  • Vanilla extract
  • Oreos
  • Frying oil

Cooking Method:

First, in a medium size bowl, put in one cup of your all purpose flour, 2 tablespoons of sugar (normal, granulated), then add ½ a teaspoon of baking powder and a pinch of salt to balance the sweet flavours. You then want to give these dry ingredients a quick whisk. After this, add one egg, ¾ of a cup of whole milk (you can add more if your batter is too thick) and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract. Now whisk all of the dry and wet ingredients together to make a nice batter. The trick is to not let it get too thick or too runny. Have a play around to find a consistency that seems right to you. Don’t be too disheartened if it takes you several attempts- this is all part of the fun!

Now that your batter is done, you can dip your Oreos in it, one by one, making sure each Oreo is evenly coated from every possible angle before popping it into the oil. As you are deep frying these, make sure to use a deeper pan and fill it ¾ with oil- a deep pan is essential to reduce the risk of the oil spitting and splashing over the edge. Always be careful when using oil, especially when deep frying, and have some sort of fire safety equipment to hand. You can check if the oil is hot enough by putting in a little bit of batter, if it starts to cook, that means the oil is perfect for your to fry you Oreos. These will only take around 3 minutes to cook, but make sure to flip the Oreo half way so that each side is evenly cooked.

Once all of your Oreos are fried, pop them on a plate and sprinkle on as much caster sugar as you like (in moderation of course, it might not be sensible to use the whole bag!). Do wait a few moments before you bite into them as they will be super hot after coming out of the oil.  These deep fried Oreos are quick, easy and absolutely delicious! They are the perfect treat when you are craving something sweet, or the perfect comfort food now that the cold winter months will soon be upon us.
